COBIDA

COBIDA Presents

The story of how 19 parents filed a group complaint with the Ohio Department of Education against a district for not identifying and serving children with dyslexia.

The school district did comply, but also began to be proactive by initiating a kindergarten screening process for dyslexia, as well as incorporating Fundations, an Orton-Gillingham approach to phonics for all kindergarten through second graders. Through this effort the number of children have begun to decline K-2 in terms of the identification of the children with reading disabilities. The initiative coincides with the 3rd grade reading guarantee that was initiated after the screening began.

Although the district still has much work to accomplish the community and the district are working together in ensuring all children can read and succeed through identification, intervention and a multi-sensory approach to reading at the primary level.
